Bouhchichi was born in Akka, a small village near Tata, in the south of Morocco. He now lives and works in Tiznit. In 1994, he gets his Baccalaureat in fine arts and joins the Centre Régional Pédagogique de Rabat where he receives a training in Fine arts as well as becoming lecturer.
With his Meta-scapes, shown at the Galerie Rê in 2008, Bouhchichi places his work in the wake of the abstract expressionists, closer to ‘action painting’, ‘dripping’, ‘splashing’ of Jackson Pollock, he is interested in the ‘action’ of painting rather than in the ‘image’ result. The strong dynamism between verticals and horizontals also brings to mind some of Mark Rothko’s work.
Sharing with Pollock a similar approach to painting on the floor, with freedom and mastership of movement and concept, Bouhchichi brings forward his own world. His paintings cannot be considered ‘all over paintings’ like those of the abstract expressionists, but they are rather much more airy, as the white background seems to come forward and become a positive space.
Working horizontally, Bouhchichi uses raw pigments, graphite sticks, brushes of various shapes and forms, scrapers, letting them slide, scrape and impose marks on the whitened background.
The artist, like a conductor, ultimately orders the interventions and imposes a kind of balance between the space, shapes and colours. The rhythmic movement of volumes and marks come together in a meditative and poetic state. His colours are transparent and ultimately full of light, from browns to greens with a hint of red, an iridescent white, shades of grey and light ochres, stains, splashes, create alternatively wholes and voids, an active world of colliding energies.
Bouhchichi works with his instinct and intervenes on the canvas in quick strokes and thought out u-turns: each new mark, each drip, stain that seem to come apart in the void are in fact reaffirming a meditative and visual balance. One year after his first solo show at the Galerie Rê that enabled Bouhchichi to close his first ‘Volumens’ series, the ‘Meta-scapes’ are bearing more turbulent and dynamic shapes. It seems the lines depicted on the canvasses create a bridge with the ‘real world’, being almost infinite. Bouhchichi brings to life a field of vision suggesting an unlimited universe- the over- sized and monumental aspect of his work.
